The album also spoke so closely to me at a time when I was partying a lot, but would fall for some chick who wasn't really in to begin with. Later I learned of Glassjaw and the influences there, connects more dots. Exactly the sort of alkaline trio style riffage I love, and those post-hardcore drums are so fuckin groovy.
Every song was such a fun ride to listen to. It was just the sassiest punk rock I'd ever heard. I don't listen to TAYF much these days (more of a Where You Want To Be/Louder Now guy) but I listened to it recently start to finish* and I was still in awe of the songwriting, the rawness yet polished nature of the recording and the one-after-another strength of the hooks in the songs.ĭefinitely a "modern classic" if any record in my life was deemed to be one.
I made my band at the time cover There's No I In Team because it was the only TBS the guitarist knew. I bought every album when it came out in Australia and started to learn about this band. I just thought John had improved/changed. I didn't really have ready access to the internet, so when a friend got me all their albums to date, probably illegally :(, I didn't realise that Fred had joined the band. Musically I'd done similar things to TBS myself in bands I was in, but what they were doing was what I wanted to do. It was sort of like my Dad's Queen fandom collided with my emo/pop punk sensibilities. I had always liked the idea of 2 singers, like how Mark & Tom from Blink would swap, but this was next level. I think it was 2008 or 2009 before I heard Tell All Your Friends and I was absolutely floored. I was really late to the party in terms of TBS! Partly because of Australia being behind the curve in terms of music distribution, and partly because I take forever to try new things! HEY!! Check out /r/posthardcore and /r/pop_rock! r/poppunkjerk is my favorite subreddit, by far.
